Restaurante Trinquete

Tucked beside Lesaka's historic pelota court (trinquete), this no-frills restaurant has been feeding locals and in-the-know visitors for decades with honest Navarrese-Basque cooking built around wood-fired meat and seasonal produce from the surrounding valleys.

What to order

The txuleta — a thick-cut, bone-in rib steak from Basque-country cattle aged for weeks — is grilled over charcoal and served barely rested, pink to the bone, with a handful of sea salt and nothing else. It is one of the best renditions of this classic outside San Sebastián, at roughly half the price.

Start with the local white asparagus when in season (April–June), dressed simply with olive oil and a whisper of salt, or the porrusalda, a silky leek-and-potato soup that tastes like the Navarrese countryside in a bowl.

Atmosphere and booking

The dining room is wood-panelled and unpretentious, filled at weekends with multi-generational Navarrese families celebrating communions and birthdays — a sure sign you are eating in the right place. The sound of the pelota game occasionally drifts through the walls, adding to the sense of deep local authenticity.

Reservations are strongly recommended for Friday and Saturday lunch, which is the main eating occasion in the region. The menú del día on weekdays offers three courses with wine for around €14 — extraordinary value for this quality.
