Iglesia de San Esteban Protomártir
Rising above Lesaka's rooftops on a rocky promontory, this 16th-century parish church is the town's most iconic silhouette. Its austere Navarrese Gothic stonework and commanding bell tower have watched over the Bidasoa valley for five centuries.
Architecture worth the climb
The church was built in stages between the 15th and 17th centuries, blending late Gothic structure with Renaissance detailing around the main portal. Step inside to find a gilded baroque altarpiece that glows amber in the afternoon light filtering through narrow lancet windows.
The stone staircase leading up from the old quarter is itself a journey — flanked by mossy walls and potted geraniums, it gives you a first taste of Lesaka's unhurried pace before you even reach the door.
Local life around the church
The plaza in front of the church doubles as a gathering point for the town's famous San Fermín Txiki festivities each July, when locals in white and red fill every step. Even on quiet weekdays you'll find elderly neighbours chatting on the benches while swifts wheel overhead.
Ask at the tourist office on Calle Mayor for the key if the church is locked — a common Navarrese custom that rewards the curious traveller with a private viewing of the interior.
