Peñas de Aia Natural Park
Straddling the border of Navarre and the Basque Country, the Peñas de Aia massif offers some of the most dramatic ridge walking in the western Pyrenees, with the three summits of Aiako Harria looming above oak and beech forest. Lesaka sits at the foot of the park, making it the ideal overnight base for an early-morning ascent.
Trails from Lesaka's doorstep
The GR-38 long-distance route passes through Lesaka and connects directly to the park's trail network, so you can lace up your boots in the village square and be in deep forest within 20 minutes.
A popular half-day loop climbs through chestnut woodland to the Artikutza reservoir viewpoint, returning via the Endara valley — roughly 12 km with 500 m of elevation gain, suitable for fit walkers.
Wildlife and seasonal colour
The park shelters roe deer, wild boar and a healthy population of griffon vultures that ride thermals above the granite ridges — bring binoculars for the upper sections.
Autumn transforms the beech forest into a copper-and-gold cathedral, generally peaking in late October, while spring brings carpets of ferns and the call of cuckoos echoing across the valleys.
