Lesaka Weekly Market (Mercado Semanal)

Every Tuesday morning the small plaza beside the Ayuntamiento fills with stalls run by local farmers and artisans from the Bidasoa-Txingudi valley, offering a snapshot of what Navarrese households actually eat rather than a curated tourist experience. Arrive before 10:00 to catch the best selection and the liveliest atmosphere.

What to look for

Seasonal produce is the draw: fat Piquillo peppers from the Ebro valley arrive in late summer, while autumn brings wild mushrooms — particularly perretxikos (St George's mushrooms) and níscalos — foraged from the surrounding forests.

Local cheesemakers sell Idiazabal-style smoked sheep's cheese from the Navarrese highlands; buying a wedge directly from the producer is both cheaper and more flavoursome than anything you'll find in a supermarket.

Beyond food

A handful of stalls sell handmade espadrilles, Basque berets (boinas) and woven baskets — practical crafts that have been traded at this market for generations rather than items manufactured for souvenir shops.

The market wraps up by midday, after which the bar on the plaza corner does a roaring trade in txakoli wine and pintxos for vendors and shoppers alike — join in.
