Pintxos at Bar Txokoa
Tucked into the ground floor of a centuries-old stone building on Calle Nagusia, Bar Txokoa is where Lesaka's residents actually eat — not a tourist trap but a neighbourhood bar that takes its pintxos seriously. The counter groans with anchovy-and-pepper combos, bacalao croquetas and gildas assembled with the precision of people who have been making them for decades.
What to order
The gilda — a skewer of guindilla pepper, anchovy and olive — is the benchmark pintxo of the Basque-Navarrese border, and Txokoa's version uses salt-packed anchovies from Hondarribia, noticeably better than the tinned variety used elsewhere.
For something more substantial, ask for the bacalao al pil-pil if it appears on the daily chalkboard: salt cod slow-cooked in olive oil until the sauce emulsifies into a glossy, gelatinous cloud — a dish that demands patience and rewards it.
When to go and how to order
The pintxo hour runs from 13:00–15:00 and again from 20:00–22:00; outside these windows the kitchen is quiet and the counter selection limited. Point at what you want, order a glass of local txakoli or a Navarrese rosado, and stand at the bar like a local.
The bar fills quickly on Friday and Saturday evenings — arrive at opening time or expect to eat standing on the pavement, which, in good weather, is no hardship at all.
