Valle di Furore Gorge Walk

The Valle di Furore is the deep limestone ravine that gave the fjord its name, slicing inland from the sea through ancient chestnut and oak woodland. A marked trail follows the seasonal stream bed up through the gorge, past abandoned paper mills that once supplied the Republic of Amalfi, offering a cool, shaded escape from the coastal heat that almost no tourist map bothers to mention.

The Trail

The path begins at the bottom of the fjord staircase and follows the Torrente Schiato upstream through increasingly narrow canyon walls. The route is roughly 3 km one-way to the uppermost mill ruins, gaining about 200 metres of elevation on a mix of stone-paved mule track and natural rock.

Mosses, ferns and wild cyclamen carpet the canyon floor, fed by the stream that trickles even in August. After heavy autumn rain the torrent becomes a proper waterfall cascade — a completely different spectacle from the summer trickle.

The Ancient Paper Mills

Amalfi was medieval Europe's paper-making capital, and the Valle di Furore once hummed with water-powered cartiere (paper mills). Several roofless ruins remain along the trail, their mill wheels rusted in place, ivy-draped and atmospheric.

The Museo della Carta in nearby Amalfi town provides context for what you see in the valley; visiting the museum before the walk makes the ruins feel far more alive.

Wildlife & Best Season

The gorge is a reliable spot for peregrine falcons, which nest in the upper cliff faces, and for the rare Amalfi wall lizard (Podarcis sicula campestris) sunning itself on limestone outcrops.

Spring (April–May) is ideal: the stream is full, wildflowers are in bloom and temperatures in the gorge stay around 18°C even when the coast bakes. Avoid the trail after heavy rain as flash flooding is possible.
