Furore Vendemmia (Harvest Experience)

Every September, the tiny terraced vineyards above Furore come alive for the vendemmia — the grape harvest — and a handful of local producers welcome visitors to join the picking. Working alongside farmers on slopes so steep they use monorail systems to carry the fruit down is one of the most visceral and joyful agricultural experiences available anywhere on the Italian coast.

The Harvest

The Fenile, Ginestra and Ripoli white-grape varieties ripen first, usually in the first two weeks of September, followed by the red Piedirosso and Aglianico. The timing shifts by a week or two each year depending on the summer, so contact producers in late August to confirm the schedule.

Picking on near-vertical terraces is genuinely hard work — the rows are too narrow for machinery and every bunch is cut by hand with small curved knives. Locals move with practised ease; visitors tend to be slower but are welcomed with good humour and, crucially, with food.

After the Pick

Most producers end the harvest day with a long communal lunch of whatever is in season: grilled sausages, fresh ricotta, bread baked in a wood oven, and last year's wine drunk from ceramic jugs in the shade of a pergola. This meal alone is worth the trip.

Some farms, including Cantine Marisa Cuomo in nearby Furore (the most celebrated Furore DOC producer), offer formal harvest experiences with cellar tours and vertical tastings of multiple vintages — book these well in advance through their website.

How to Join

The most authentic access comes through the Furore Pro Loco (local tourism office), which maintains a list of small family producers open to harvest visitors. Email proloco@comune.furore.sa.it in August to ask for introductions.

Alternatively, the Strade del Vino e dei Sapori della Campania consortium organises structured agri-tourism harvest days across the region, including in the Furore DOC zone, with English-speaking guides.
