Furore Panoramic Terrace (Belvedere di Furore)
The hilltop village of Furore sits at roughly 300 metres above sea level, spread across a ridge so narrow that the houses seem to teeter over the abyss on both sides. The belvedere at the top of the village offers an unobstructed 180-degree sweep from Capri to the Faraglioni of Positano — one of the great unremarked viewpoints on the entire coast.
What You See
On a clear morning the island of Capri floats on the horizon to the south-east, while the Lattari Mountains tumble steeply into the sea on either side, their terraced lemon and vine groves stitched together by dry-stone walls.
Below you the SS163 hairpins are visible as a thin grey ribbon, and if you time it right you can watch the hydrofoil from Naples carve a white wake across the deep blue Tyrrhenian.
The village itself is part of the view — Furore is classified as one of the 'Borghi più belli d'Italia' (Most Beautiful Villages of Italy), and its mural-covered walls and cascading bougainvillea make the foreground as interesting as the distance.
The Painted Village Walk
Furore has been an open-air art gallery since the 1980s, when local administrators invited Italian and international artists to paint the walls of the village. Over 30 murals now cover staircases, archways and house facades, making the walk up to the belvedere a gallery visit in itself.
Pick up a free mural map from the Pro Loco office near the main road junction; the full circuit takes about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace and gains roughly 150 metres of elevation on well-maintained stepped paths.
