Furore Fjord (Fiordo di Furore)
Tucked between two sheer limestone cliffs on the SS163 Amalfitana, the Fiordo di Furore is a narrow sea inlet so dramatic it barely looks real. A tiny fishing hamlet of colourful houses clings to the gorge walls, making it one of the most photographed — and most surprising — spots on the entire Amalfi Coast.
The Fjord Itself
The inlet is only a few dozen metres wide, carved by the Schiato torrent over millennia into the Lattari Mountains. At road level a single-arch bridge spans the gap, and from it you look straight down to a cobalt cove where fishermen still moor their bright wooden boats.
Every August the bridge becomes a diving platform for the Tuffo del Fiordo, a cliff-diving competition that draws free-divers from across Europe — locals say the tradition dates back to daring young fishermen of the 1950s.
Reaching the Cove
A steep staircase of about 300 steps descends from the roadside car park to the tiny pebbly beach. The descent takes roughly 15 minutes; the climb back up in July heat is a genuine workout, so bring water.
The beach itself is free and rarely crowded before 10 am. The crystalline water is calm enough for snorkelling around the cliff base, where sea urchins and small moray eels hide in the rock crevices.
