Furore Fjord (Fiordo di Furore)
Tucked between two sheer limestone cliffs on the SS163 Amalfitana, the Fiordo di Furore is a narrow sea-inlet so dramatic it has hosted the World Cliff Diving Championship for decades. Blink and you'll miss the turn-off, but those who stop discover one of the Amalfi Coast's most photographed — and least crowded — corners.
The Fjord Itself
The inlet is barely 30 metres wide at its mouth, where an arched stone bridge spans the gap between the cliffs some 30 metres above the water — that same bridge serves as the cliff-diving platform each summer.
A handful of colourful fishermen's houses, called 'gorfiglio', are wedged at the base of the gorge, their painted facades reflecting in the turquoise water below. The contrast of ochre, terracotta and cobalt against grey limestone is extraordinary.
You reach the pebble beach and the houses by descending a steep staircase cut directly into the rock from the roadside layby on the SS163.
Swimming & Cliff Diving
The water inside the fjord is exceptionally clear and calm, sheltered from the open Tyrrhenian swell, making it a superb spot for a swim even when the sea elsewhere is choppy.
Every July the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series brings athletes leaping from the bridge, but outside competition season the fjord is blissfully quiet — arrive before 9 am or after 5 pm to have it almost to yourself.
Getting There
The layby on the SS163 between Amalfi and Positano is the only practical stopping point; look for the blue 'Fiordo di Furore' sign roughly 3 km west of Conca dei Marini.
There is no car park, so the SITA Sud bus from Amalfi or Positano is the stress-free option — ask the driver to stop at the fiordo. The descent to the beach takes about five minutes on foot.
