Antibes Old Town (Vieil Antibes)
A 20-minute walk or a two-stop train ride east of Juan-les-Pins, the ochre-walled old town of Antibes is one of the best-preserved medieval centres on the Riviera — and the perfect half-day escape from the beach. Ramparts, a Picasso museum inside an actual castle and a legendary covered market await.
Ramparts & Château Grimaldi
The 16th-century sea ramparts stretch along the waterfront and offer sweeping views across the Baie des Anges toward Nice. Walk the full length of the Promenade Amiral de Grasse at dusk when the stones glow amber and yachts glitter below.
Inside the ramparts, the Château Grimaldi houses the Musée Picasso, where the artist lived and worked in 1946. The collection of 245 works he donated — paintings, ceramics, drawings — is displayed in the very rooms where they were made, giving the experience an intimacy no major city gallery can match. Entry is €8.
Marché Provençal & Rue Sade
The covered Marché Provençal on Cours Masséna operates every morning except Monday (daily in summer) and is one of the most authentic produce markets on the coast — socca pancakes, lavender honey, tapenade by the kilo and flowers so cheap they feel stolen.
From the market, duck into Rue Sade and the surrounding lanes for independent fromageries, wine caves and the occasional artisan soap shop. This is where locals actually shop, not tourists.
End the loop with a pastis at one of the café terraces on Place Nationale, a sun-drenched square that feels unchanged since the 1970s.
