Punta Galea Clifftop & Lighthouse
At the northern tip of Getxo, the Punta Galea headland drops sheer into the Cantabrian Sea in a series of wave-carved limestone terraces that are among the most dramatic coastal scenery in the Basque Country. The lighthouse here has guided ships into the Nervión mouth since 1862, and the clifftop path delivers 180-degree ocean panoramas that feel genuinely wild.
The Clifftop Walk
A well-maintained path runs from the Gorrondatxe-Azkorri beach parking area along the cliff edge to the lighthouse, passing through low coastal scrub with the sea crashing far below. On clear days you can see the headlands of Cantabria to the west and the open Atlantic stretching north without interruption.
The limestone terraces below the path are a famous surf break called Punta Galea, regularly chosen as a stage for the Billabong Pro surf competition. Even when there's no event on, watching surfers pick lines through the reef from the clifftop is mesmerising.
Sunset and Birdwatching
This headland is one of the best spots in the Basque Country to watch the sun sink into the Atlantic — the sky turns through every shade of orange and the lighthouse beam begins to sweep just as the last light fades. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset and stake out a spot on the flat rock shelves near the lighthouse fence.
In autumn, Punta Galea is a notable raptor migration watchpoint. Thousands of honey buzzards, marsh harriers and black kites funnel past on their way south, and local birdwatchers set up telescopes along the path from late August through October.
Practical Access
There is a small car park at the end of Punta Galea road, reachable by car or taxi from Algorta in about 10 minutes. No direct bus serves the very tip, but the Gorrondatxe beach bus stop (summer service from Algorta) leaves you a 25-minute cliff walk away.
The path is unpaved in sections and can be slippery after rain; sturdy shoes are advised. There are no facilities at the headland itself, so bring water.
