Cabo Billano & Punta Galea Clifftop
At the northwestern tip of Getxo, Punta Galea is where the manicured resort town ends and the raw Basque coast begins. The clifftop path here delivers vertiginous views over churning Atlantic swells, a lighthouse, and on clear days, a horizon that stretches to infinity.
The Clifftop Walk
A well-maintained footpath runs along the cliff edge from the Arrigunaga beach car park to the Punta Galea lighthouse, covering roughly 2 km of dramatic coastal scenery. The path is mostly flat and family-friendly, though stay behind the safety barriers — the drops are serious.
In winter and autumn, this is one of the best free-to-watch big-wave surfing spots in Europe; swells funnelled by the Bay of Biscay can stack up to 10 metres, attracting professional surfers to the reef below.
The Lighthouse & Fort
The Faro de Punta Galea lighthouse dates from 1852 and still operates as an active aid to navigation. Beside it, the ruins of a Civil War-era artillery battery add a layer of sombre history to the dramatic setting.
The battery's concrete gun emplacements are freely accessible and make for striking foreground elements in wide-angle coastal photographs — pair them with the lighthouse and a stormy sky for maximum drama.
Sunset Timing
Punta Galea faces almost due west, making it the definitive sunset viewpoint in greater Bilbao. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset and you'll share the clifftop with local families, dog walkers and photographers all angled at the same burning horizon.
In summer, sunset here falls after 21:30, giving you time for a pintxos stop in Algorta's old port before heading up.
