Playa de Ereaga
Ereaga is the kind of beach that makes you wonder why anyone bothers with far-flung destinations: a broad arc of golden sand backed by a palm-lined promenade, with the Vizcaya Bridge visible at one end and the open Atlantic at the other. It's Getxo's social living room in summer.
The Beach Itself
The sand at Ereaga is fine and well-maintained, the water is Atlantic-cool (averaging 19–21 °C in August), and the beach is Blue Flag certified — meaning clean water and good facilities including lifeguards, showers and accessible ramps.
The beach faces southwest, so it catches afternoon sun beautifully and the light stays warm well into the evening. It's rarely as crowded as San Sebastián's La Concha despite being equally lovely.
The Promenade & Chiringuitos
Behind the sand, the Paseo de Ereaga is lined with grand early-20th-century casino buildings, seafood restaurants and a couple of proper beach bars (chiringuitos) that serve cold Estrella Galicia and grilled fish from midday.
The most storied building on the promenade is the Gran Hotel Puente Colgante, a 1920s landmark that has hosted everyone from Spanish royalty to touring jazz musicians — worth a look inside the lobby even if you're not staying.
Water Sports & Activities
Several surf and SUP schools operate from Ereaga in summer, catering to beginners; lessons typically run 09:00–11:00 before the beach fills up. The Getxo Surf School is the longest-established operator.
The beach is also the start point for the coastal path to Arrigunaga beach further north — a 20-minute walk along the cliffs that rewards with progressively wilder scenery.
