Puente Colgante (Vizcaya Bridge)
Strung between Getxo and Portugalete since 1893, the Vizcaya Bridge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that still carries passengers and cars across the Nervión estuary on a hanging gondola. Brunel-era engineering meets everyday Basque life in the most cinematic way imaginable.
An Icon Still Earning Its Keep
Designed by Alberto de Palacio, a student of Gustave Eiffel, the bridge solved a Victorian-era puzzle: how to cross a busy shipping channel without blocking tall-masted vessels. The solution — a high iron lattice tower suspending a low-riding gondola on cables — was so elegant it was copied in a dozen countries.
Every few minutes the gondola glides silently across the 160-metre span, carrying up to six cars and a clutch of foot passengers for just a few cents. Locals barely glance up; for visitors, watching it drift over the green water is quietly thrilling.
Walk the High Walkway
For a fee you can ride the lift to the top catwalk, 45 metres above the estuary, and walk the full span on a narrow grated walkway with panoramic views of the Abra bay, the open Atlantic, and the red-roofed suburbs of both towns below.
The best light falls in the late afternoon when the iron turns amber and the Cantabrian hills go hazy blue behind the river mouth. Bring a wide-angle lens and a head for heights.
Getting There and Combining Visits
Metro line 1 drops you at Areeta station on the Getxo side in under 20 minutes from Bilbao. The Portugalete side is equally easy to reach, and the old town there is worth a 30-minute wander after you cross.
Combine the visit with a walk along the Getxo waterfront promenade, which begins right at the bridge's northern tower and stretches toward the marina.
