Las Arenas & Neguri Waterfront Promenade

The twin barrios of Las Arenas and Neguri line the Getxo waterfront with a parade of early-20th-century villas, wrought-iron balconies and manicured gardens that earned this stretch the nickname 'the Basque Riviera'. A leisurely walk here is a masterclass in regional modernist architecture.

The Grand Villa Belt

Strolling the Paseo de la Galea and the streets behind it, you'll pass mansions built by Bilbao's industrial elite — shipowners and iron barons who summered here from the 1890s onwards. Look for Casa Basagoiti and the turreted Villa Miramar, both still standing in impressive condition.

The neighbourhood is entirely walkable; pick up a free architectural map from the Getxo tourist office on Algorta's plaza to identify the best facades.

The Marina & Yacht Club

At the Las Arenas end, the Real Club Marítimo del Abra marina fills the old harbour with gleaming white sailboats. The waterfront terrace bars here are perfect for a late-morning coffee watching the masts sway.

In summer, the marina hosts regattas that draw competitive sailors from across the Bay of Biscay — check the club's calendar if you want to catch the spectacle.

Evening Paseo Culture

Locals reclaim the promenade every evening for the classic Basque paseo: a slow, sociable stroll that starts around 19:00 and dissolves into pintxos stops by 21:00. Join in rather than rush — this is the authentic rhythm of Getxo life.

The promenade is also a fine running and cycling route; a dedicated lane keeps pedestrians and cyclists separate all the way to the Arrigunaga beach.
