Algorta Old Village (Casco Histórico)

Perched on the clifftop above the Puerto Viejo, Algorta's historic village core is a labyrinth of steep, whitewashed lanes, flower-draped balconies and tiny squares that most visitors walk straight past on their way to the port below. It's one of the most photogenic corners of the entire Basque coast.

The Whitewashed Lanes

The casco histórico dates from the 16th century, when Algorta was a self-contained fishing community entirely separate from the resort developments to the south. The street plan hasn't changed much: narrow, irregular alleys climb and dip between houses so close you could shake hands with a neighbour across the gap.

Key streets to explore include Calle Aretxondo and the area around the Iglesia de San Nikolas — the 18th-century parish church whose terrace offers a surprise view straight down to the harbour below.

Local Craft & Art Spaces

The village has quietly attracted artists and craftspeople over the past two decades. Small ceramic studios, a handful of independent bookshops and a couple of contemporary galleries occupy ground floors that once housed fishing tackle and rope stores.

On the first Sunday of each month, a small artisan market sets up in the lanes around the church, selling ceramics, jewellery and local preserves — a low-key but genuine community event with none of the tourist-market polish.

Eating & Drinking in the Village

Beyond the port bars below, the village itself has a few excellent spots: Restaurante Kai Alde on Calle Aretxondo does a serious menú del día for around 14 € on weekdays, drawing local workers rather than tourists.

In the evening, the small terrace bars around Plaza Euskadi fill with residents sipping vermouth before dinner — a ritual that starts around 19:00 and is entirely unpretentious.
