Puente Colgante (Vizcaya Bridge)
Straddling the Nervión estuary between Getxo and Portugalete, the iron Vizcaya Bridge has been swinging its gondola across the water since 1893 — and it earned a UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2006. Riding the low-slung gondola feels like stepping into a Belle Époque postcard.
Crossing by Gondola
The gondola — a suspended platform dangling from the bridge's high iron lattice — crosses the 160-metre estuary in about 90 seconds, carrying cars, cyclists and pedestrians alike every eight minutes or so.
Buy a ticket on the spot at either the Getxo or Portugalete landing; the crossing is cheap, quick and genuinely thrilling, especially when a container ship slides past at eye level.
Walking the High Walkway
For panoramic views, take the lift to the top walkway, 45 metres above the water. The catwalk stretches the full span and delivers sweeping vistas of the estuary mouth, the green Basque hills and the open Bay of Biscay.
The best light for photography hits the bridge in the late afternoon, when the iron turns amber and the Portugalete old town glows on the opposite bank.
History & Context
Designed by Alberto de Palacio, a student of Gustave Eiffel, the bridge solved a thorny problem: how to link two busy banks without blocking tall-masted ships. Its solution — a high frame with a travelling gondola — was copied in a dozen countries.
A small on-site museum at the Getxo tower tells the engineering story with original blueprints and period photographs.
