Gorrondatxe-Azkorri Beach
Gorrondatxe-Azkorri is the wilder, less-groomed cousin of the more famous Basque beaches — a long arc of dark sand backed by low dunes and flanked by layered limestone cliffs that contain some of the most visible geological strata in northern Spain. The Beach Itself
The beach runs for about 800 metres and faces northwest, which means it catches Atlantic swells reliably and is best for swimming on calmer summer days when the break is small. The sand is coarser and darker than the Mediterranean norm, and the water stays cool even in August — bring a wetsuit if you plan to surf.
A chiringuito (beach bar) operates in summer months, serving cold drinks and simple bocadillos. Outside summer the beach is almost deserted, which makes it ideal for long, wind-blown walks with the cliffs to yourself.
The Geological Wonder
The cliffs at the southern end of the beach expose a near-continuous sequence of Cretaceous limestone beds tilted almost vertically — a dramatic natural textbook of deep time that you can walk right up to and touch. Geologists have identified the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary layer here, the same global event marker associated with the extinction of the dinosaurs.
Even if stratigraphy is not your thing, the visual effect of those tilted, striped cliffs reflecting in the wet sand at low tide is extraordinary and highly photogenic.
Getting There
The beach is a 20-minute walk north from Algorta metro station along a coastal path, or a short taxi ride. In summer a local bus service runs from Algorta; check Bizkaibus route A3518 for current timetables.
Parking is available in a small car park at the beach access road but fills quickly on summer weekends. Arriving by metro and walking the cliff path is both easier and more scenic.
