Parque Forestal de Fuenlabrada (Bosque Sur)
Stretching along Fuenlabrada's southern boundary, the Bosque Sur is a planted pine and holm-oak forest that most visitors to Madrid never know exists — a genuine green lung where the city dissolves almost instantly into birdsong and resin-scented shade. It is the city's finest spot for a proper outdoor escape without leaving the municipality.
Trails and Wildlife
A network of colour-coded dirt tracks totalling around 18 kilometres winds through the forest, ranging from a flat 3-kilometre family loop to a more demanding 9-kilometre circuit that climbs to the southern ridge. Mountain bikers share the wider paths but the trails are wide enough that walkers and cyclists coexist comfortably.
The understorey is rich with lavender, rockrose and thyme that perfume the air from April through June. Birdwatchers regularly log hoopoes, bee-eaters and Iberian green woodpeckers here in spring — bring a field guide and binoculars for the best chance of spotting them in the open glades.
Facilities and Access
Several picnic areas with stone tables and barbecue grills are dotted along the main trail, making the forest a favourite weekend destination for Fuenlabrada families from March to October. The eastern entrance on Avenida de Parla has a small car park and a drinking-water fountain.
The forest connects via a green corridor to the municipal sports complex, so it is easy to combine a morning run with a dip in the nearby public swimming pool in summer. Dogs are welcome on leads throughout the forest, which adds considerably to the cheerful weekend atmosphere.
