Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles
Standing alone at the northern edge of town, this small 17th-century hermitage is one of the oldest surviving structures in Fuenlabrada and the spiritual heart of the city's most important annual festival. Most visitors to the Madrid region never know it exists.
Architecture and History
The whitewashed stone chapel follows the simple Castilian hermitage typology — a single nave, a modest bell tower and a carved stone doorway — but the interior shelters a beautifully preserved polychrome altarpiece dedicated to the Virgin of the Angels, Fuenlabrada's patron saint.
The building dates to around 1640 and has survived remarkably intact; the thick walls and terracotta-tiled roof give it the same timeless quality as the rural chapels you find scattered across the plains of Castile-La Mancha.
The Festival of the Virgen de los Ángeles
Every year on 2 August the entire city walks in procession to the ermita for the Fiesta de la Virgen de los Ángeles, one of the most genuinely local celebrations in the southern Madrid area.
If you visit during the festival you will find the surrounding meadow filled with food stalls, live folk music and families who have been making the same walk for generations — an experience that feels entirely unscripted and authentic.
