Valle d'Itria Cycling Route — Locorotondo to Alberobello
The 14-kilometre cycling route linking Locorotondo to Alberobello along quiet country lanes is one of the most scenic low-traffic rides in southern Italy. The route threads through the Valle d'Itria's signature landscape: dry-stone walls, trulli farmhouses, olive groves and vineyards in every direction.
The route
Start from the car park on Via Madonna della Catena at the edge of Locorotondo's historic centre, where several local outfitters rent bikes by the day. The route descends gently into the valley on the SP134 before branching onto the Strada Vicinale dei Trulli, a narrow lane almost entirely free of cars.
The midpoint brings you to a cluster of inhabited trulli farmhouses where fig trees lean over the stone walls and roosters provide the soundtrack. This is the visual heart of the Valle d'Itria and the spot most likely to make you stop and simply stare.
Practicalities and return
Alberobello is the obvious turnaround point — lock your bike and spend an hour in the Rione Monti trulli district before cycling back. The return leg is slightly uphill toward Locorotondo but the gradient is gentle and the views of the town on the hilltop ahead are ample motivation.
Alternatively, load the bikes onto a Ferrovie del Sud-Est regional train from Alberobello station back to Locorotondo — the line connects the two towns in about 15 minutes and bikes travel free.
