Mercato Settimanale di Locorotondo
Every Thursday morning a no-frills weekly market spreads across the streets around Piazza Aldo Moro, drawing farmers and vendors from across the Valle d'Itria. It's the fastest way to understand what Puglians actually eat and buy.
What you'll find
Stalls pile high with fat Candonga strawberries in spring, sun-dried figs and almonds in late summer, and gnarly cime di rapa (turnip tops) through the winter months. Local cheese vendors sell fresh ricotta forte — a sharp, spreadable ricotta unique to the Murge plateau — straight from plastic tubs.
Alongside food, the market sells household linens, work clothing and the kind of inexpensive ceramics that locals actually use rather than the tourist-grade stuff found in gift shops. Prices are refreshingly honest.
Timing and tips
Arrive between 8 and 10 am for the fullest stalls and the liveliest atmosphere; by noon vendors begin packing up. Bring cash — few stalls take cards — and a reusable bag, as plastic bags are scarce.
The market is a short walk from the centro storico, making it easy to combine with an early-morning passeggiata through the white lanes before the day-trippers arrive from Alberobello.
