Belvedere di Locorotondo
Perched on the rim of the Valle d'Itria, this crescent-shaped terrace delivers a panorama that stops first-time visitors dead in their tracks. Whitewashed rooftops, conical trulli rooftops and a patchwork of vineyards stretch to the horizon in every direction.
The view itself
The belvedere wraps around the southern edge of the old town, framed by flowering oleander and low stone walls. At sunset the limestone facades turn amber and the trulli of Alberobello shimmer in the far distance — bring a wide-angle lens and arrive 30 minutes before the sun drops.
On clear winter mornings the Adriatic is visible to the east, a thin silver line above the olive groves. Locals jog this loop at dawn, so early risers share it with residents rather than tour groups.
Getting the most out of it
The full circular walk around the historic centre takes about 25 minutes at a stroll. The best single vantage point is directly behind the Chiesa di San Giorgio Martire, where the valley drops sharply and the composition needs no filter.
A handful of benches make it a perfect picnic perch. Pick up a piece of frise (twice-baked barley bread) and local Primitivo from the alimentari on Via Nardelli before heading up.
