Centro Storico — the White Village Loop
Locorotondo earned its name — 'round place' — from the near-perfect circle its medieval streets trace on the hilltop. Walking the centro storico is less a sightseeing exercise and more an immersion in living, breathing Puglian village life.
What makes it special
Unlike some over-restored Puglian towns, Locorotondo's historic core is still full of residents: grandmothers airing laundry from wrought-iron balconies, kids on bicycles, and the smell of ragù drifting from open doorways. The buildings are painted a brilliant chalk-white by municipal decree, giving the whole town a unified, photogenic coherence.
The signature architectural detail is the cummerse — steeply pitched gabled rooftops unique to Locorotondo. Look up on Via Nardelli and Via Morelli e Silvati to spot the best-preserved examples, their triangular profiles silhouetted against the sky.
Key stops on the loop
Begin at Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, the social heart of the town, then thread through the narrow calata toward the Chiesa Madre di San Giorgio Martire, whose Baroque facade anchors the highest point of the village. The church interior holds a fine 18th-century altarpiece worth a five-minute stop.
Continue along the outer ring road past the belvedere and back through Piazza Aldo Moro, where the evening passeggiata begins around 7 pm. The full loop is roughly 1.2 km and takes 40 minutes without stops.
