Marché Hebdomadaire de Les Houches
Every Saturday morning from June to September, the centre of Les Houches fills with a proper Savoyard farmers' market where local producers sell raw-milk Reblochon, honey from hives kept above 1,500 metres, wild-blueberry jam and hand-cut charcuterie. It is small, authentic and completely untuned to tourist expectations — which is exactly why it is worth getting up for.
What to Buy
The cheese stalls are the heart of the market. Look for Reblochon fermier — the farmhouse version stamped with a green casein label rather than the red label of the dairy version — and Tomme de Savoie aged to a grey-brown rind. Producers from the Contamines and Servoz valleys often drive up with wheels cut to order.
Honey from the Vallée de l'Arve is another standout: sapin (silver fir) honey is almost black, intensely resinous and unlike anything you will find in a supermarket. Buy a small jar and eat it on bread with local butter the same morning.
The Wider Food Scene Around the Market
Several of the village's boulangeries put out their best work on Saturday: the boulangerie on Route Nationale bakes a pain de campagne with a crackling crust that locals queue for from 08:00 onwards.
A handful of artisan stalls sell carved wooden kitchen items, hand-knitted wool goods and locally produced beeswax candles — modest, useful things rather than the overpriced Alpine kitsch found in Chamonix.
Timing and Location
The market sets up around the Place de la Mairie in the village centre and runs from approximately 08:30 to 12:30. Arrive before 09:30 for the best cheese selection; by 11:00 the most popular producers have sold out.
Pair the market visit with breakfast at one of the café-terraces on the square — a café crème and a croissant while watching the market come alive is one of the simplest pleasures Les Houches offers.
