Villa del Balbianello

Perched on a wooded promontory jutting into Lake Como, Villa del Balbianello is one of Italy's most photographed properties — its loggia-topped terraces draped in wisteria have starred in James Bond and Star Wars films. The FAI-managed estate rewards slow exploration: manicured box hedges, antique globes, and uninterrupted water views at every turn.

The Gardens & Loggia

The terraced gardens cascade down the promontory in a series of clipped hedges, climbing roses and stone balustrades, all framing a postcard panorama of the Tremezzina shoreline. Cardinal Angelo Durini, who built the loggia in the 18th century, chose the site for its theatrical light — and it still delivers at golden hour.

The loggia itself houses the eclectic collection of explorer Guido Monzino, who donated the villa to FAI in 1988: maps, climbing gear from his 1973 Everest expedition, and lacquerware sit side by side, giving the place a genuine human story beyond its beauty.

Getting There & Practicalities

The most romantic approach is by taxi-boat from Lenno's small harbour — the five-minute crossing lets you see the promontory exactly as it looks in every postcard. Boats depart whenever passengers gather; agree a return time with your driver.

Alternatively, a signed footpath from Lenno village climbs through the woods to the estate gate in about 20 minutes. The path is shaded and well-maintained, making it a pleasant warm-up before the gardens.

Timing Your Visit

Spring (late April–May) is peak wisteria season, when the purple cascades over the loggia create an almost surreal backdrop. Arrive at opening time to photograph the terraces before tour groups arrive.

The villa is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays; on Wednesdays the gardens are open but the interior is not. Check the FAI website for seasonal closures, especially in November when the estate shuts for winter.
