Lenno Weekly Market
Every Tuesday morning the waterfront lungolago and the streets fanning back from Piazza del Mercato fill with stalls selling everything from Lariano cheese and wild-mushroom preserves to linen tablecloths and garden seedlings. It's the most authentic slice of everyday Como-lake life you'll find in this stretch of the western shore.
What to Buy
The food stalls are the main event: look for vendors selling bresaola della Valtellina, local honey from beekeepers in the hills above Lenno, and jarred mostarda di frutta — a sharp, mustardy fruit condiment that pairs brilliantly with aged cheese and is almost impossible to find in supermarkets.
A handful of stalls specialise in dried porcini and mixed funghi sott'olio (mushrooms preserved in olive oil), harvested from the chestnut forests above Colonno and Argegno. These make excellent, packable souvenirs that won't raise an eyebrow at customs.
The Atmosphere
By 9 am the market is in full swing and the bar tables outside the lakeside cafés are occupied by locals reading Corriere della Sera over a macchiato. The pace is unhurried; vendors chat with regular customers in the local dialect and prices are rarely inflated for tourists.
The market winds down by 12:30 pm, after which the stall-holders pack up with impressive speed, leaving the piazza ready for the lunchtime crowd. Arrive before 10 am for the best selection and the liveliest atmosphere.
