Valle della Camoggia Gorge Walk
Just minutes from Lenno's lakeside promenade, the Valle della Camoggia cuts a dramatic limestone gorge into the hillside above the Tremezzina — a shaded, surprisingly wild trail following a rushing torrent past mossy boulders, small waterfalls, and chestnut forest that feels a world away from the manicured villas below.
The Trail
The main path follows the Camoggia stream uphill from the edge of Lenno village, crossing it several times on wooden footbridges before reaching a series of small cascades roughly 45 minutes in — the highest drops about eight metres into a clear pool popular with local teenagers in July and August.
The full trail continues to the hamlet of Bonate and can be extended to Colonno on the lake shore, making a satisfying half-day loop of around 8 km with about 400 m of elevation gain — manageable for any reasonably fit walker.
Wildlife & Wildflowers
In spring the gorge floor is carpeted with wild garlic, wood anemones, and the occasional early-purple orchid; the damp limestone walls support hart's-tongue ferns and mosses that keep the air noticeably cooler than the lake shore even in August.
Listen for the grey wagtail bobbing on mid-stream boulders and, if you are quiet at dawn or dusk, the rasping call of a kingfisher working the deeper pools — the Camoggia is one of the few streams on the western shore clean enough to support them.
