Villa del Balbianello

Perched on a wooded promontory at the tip of the Lavedo peninsula, Villa del Balbianello is arguably the most photogenic building on all of Lake Como — its loggia-crowned terraces tumbling down to the water have starred in James Bond and Star Wars films alike. The FAI-managed estate combines obsessive topiary, antique maps, and jaw-dropping panoramas in a single visit.

The Gardens & Loggia

The terraced gardens are a masterclass in theatrical landscaping: wisteria-draped balustrades frame views across to Bellagio and the Grigne mountains, and every turn reveals a new photogenic angle over the deep-blue water.

The loggia at the summit houses explorer Guido Monzino's eclectic collection — Himalayan expedition gear, African art, and antique globes — giving the villa a wonderfully eccentric personality beyond its picture-perfect exterior.

Getting There & Timing

The most romantic approach is by water taxi from Lenno's small harbour, a five-minute ride that deposits you directly at the villa's private dock — book ahead in high season as timed entry slots fill fast.

Alternatively, a signed footpath through the woods from Lenno village takes about 20 minutes and rewards you with dappled light through chestnut trees before the lakeside spectacle opens up.
