Valle del Finale & Lenno Waterfall Walk
Behind Lenno's waterfront, the Valle del Finale cuts into the Larian Triangle hills in a narrow gorge carved by the Torrente Finale. A well-signed circular trail follows the stream through chestnut and oak woodland past a series of small cascades, offering cool shade and dramatic rock scenery just 15 minutes' walk from the ferry dock.
The Trail
The path begins at the northern edge of Lenno village, signed 'Valle del Finale' from the SP71 road. It climbs gently along the left bank of the torrent, crossing a series of stone footbridges before reaching the main waterfall — a 10-metre drop into a clear pool — after about 40 minutes of easy walking.
The circular route continues uphill through the hamlet of Binate, where a bar-osteria serves cold drinks and simple panini, before looping back down to Lenno on a mule track with filtered views of the lake and Balbianello promontory through the trees. Total distance is approximately 6 km with 280 m of ascent.
Wildlife & Wildflowers
The gorge is one of the most biodiverse corners of the western Como shore. In spring the banks are thick with wild garlic, wood anemones and the occasional clump of primrose; in autumn the chestnut canopy turns a deep amber that rivals anything in the Dolomites for colour.
Listen for the drumming of great spotted woodpeckers in the upper section of the trail, and look for dippers — small, white-breasted birds — bobbing on the mid-stream rocks. The pool beneath the main waterfall is a known bathing spot for locals on hot July afternoons.
Practical Notes
The path is well-maintained but involves some uneven rocky sections near the waterfall. Sturdy trainers are sufficient in dry conditions; walking poles help on the descent from Binate in wet weather.
There is no dedicated car park at the trailhead; the walk is best started directly from Lenno ferry dock, making it an ideal half-day add-on to a boat trip from Como or Varenna.
