Sidra Pouring at a Local Sidrería
No visit to Asturias is complete without experiencing the ritual of escanciado — the theatrical pouring of cider from a bottle held high above the head into a wide glass held at hip level — and the sidrerías clustered around Lastres and the nearby town of Colunga are among the most authentic places in the region to do it properly.
The Ritual and Why It Matters
The high pour is not showmanship for tourists — it aerates the naturally fermented sidra natural, releasing its volatile esters and creating the brief, lively espuma (foam) that carries the flavour; you drink the small measure immediately, in one or two sips, before it goes flat.
In a traditional sidrería the floor is tiled and slightly sloped precisely because spilling is expected and accepted — the atmosphere is loud, communal and joyful in a way that no wine bar quite replicates.
Where to Go Near Lastres
In Lastres itself, several bars along the harbour and the old village pour sidra properly; ask for sidra natural rather than sidra con gas (the carbonated version) to get the real thing. The Bar El Puerto on the harbour front is a reliable, well-worn choice loved by locals.
For a deeper dive, the Sidrería Casa Llagar in nearby Colunga (10 minutes by car) offers a full llagar (cider mill) experience with barrels, tastings and the chance to buy bottles directly from the producer — a wonderful half-day addition to any Lastres visit.
