Playa de Lastres and Coastal Cliffs
Tucked beneath the village's towering cliffs, the small but strikingly beautiful Playa de Lastres is a dark-sand and pebble cove lapped by clear green Atlantic water. The surrounding cliff faces, streaked with ochre and grey, make it one of the most dramatically framed beaches on the Asturian coast.
The Beach and Its Surroundings
The beach is reached via a steep path descending from the harbour area and is rarely crowded even in summer, partly because the approach puts off casual visitors. The reward for the walk is a wild, unspoiled strip of coast where the cliffs shelter you from the Atlantic wind and the water is surprisingly clear.
The rock pools at the northern end of the beach are exceptionally rich in marine life — sea anemones, small crabs and limpets cling to every surface at low tide, making this a wonderful spot for children and anyone with a curiosity about intertidal ecosystems.
Coastal Walking Beyond the Beach
The GR-E9 coastal path (Camino de la Costa, the coastal variant of the Camino del Norte) passes directly through Lastres and follows the clifftops east toward Colunga and west toward Ribadesella. Even a 30-minute walk in either direction reveals vertiginous cliff-edge views and wildflower meadows running to the sea.
The cliffs between Lastres and Colunga are a designated part of the Jurassic Coast of Asturias and contain dinosaur footprint sites — a detail that transforms what might otherwise be a pleasant coastal stroll into something genuinely astonishing.
