Jurassic Museum of Asturias (MUJA)
Just 3 km from Lastres in the village of Colunga, the Museo del Jurásico de Asturias is one of Spain's finest palaeontology museums and almost absurdly undervisited given the quality of its collection. Built into the clifftop in the shape of a dinosaur footprint when seen from above, it is a design triumph as well as a scientific one.
What Makes MUJA Special
The museum tells the story of Asturias's extraordinary Jurassic coastline, where over 20 dinosaur tracksite locations have been identified along a 15 km stretch of coast. Full-scale dinosaur skeletons, interactive fossil displays and a well-curated timeline of Mesozoic life fill the bright, modern galleries.
The outdoor dinosaur park surrounding the building features life-size reconstructions of species whose actual footprints you can see on the nearby beaches — the juxtaposition of museum model and real fossil track, just minutes apart, is genuinely thrilling.
Combining MUJA with the Coastal Walk
The museum sits immediately above La Griega beach in Colunga, where a series of sauropod and theropod footprints are preserved in the rock platform at low tide. A visit that combines the museum in the morning with a low-tide walk to the actual tracks in the afternoon is one of the best half-day itineraries on this stretch of coast.
From Lastres, MUJA is reachable by car in under 10 minutes or on foot along the coastal GR-E9 path in approximately 1.5 hours — the walk itself is spectacular.
