Winstub La Charrue

Tucked into a half-timbered building a short walk from the Moder, La Charrue is the kind of Winstub — a traditional Alsatian wine-tavern — that Haguenau locals guard jealously. The menu reads like a love letter to regional cooking: choucroute garnie piled high with three kinds of charcuterie, baeckeoffe slow-cooked in Riesling, and tarte flambée so thin it crackles when you fold it.

What to order

Start with a Flammekueche — the Alsatian name for tarte flambée — topped with crème fraîche, lardons and onion, cooked in a wood-fired oven until the edges char and blister. It arrives on a wooden board and disappears faster than you expect. Follow it with the choucroute garnie, a mountain of fermented cabbage braised in Riesling and topped with smoked sausage, ham hock and pork belly.

The wine list leans entirely local: Pinot Gris from the Bas-Rhin, a crisp Sylvaner by the carafe, and a rotating selection of Alsatian Pinot Noir for those who want red. Ask the staff what is open that week — they pour generously for tasting.

Atmosphere and booking

The dining room has the lived-in warmth of a place that has been feeding the same families for generations: dark wood panelling, ceramic beer steins on a shelf, checked tablecloths and the faint smell of woodsmoke. It is not Instagram-curated; it is simply honest.

Reservations are strongly recommended on Friday and Saturday evenings when locals fill every table. Lunch on a weekday is more relaxed and often features a shorter prix-fixe menu that represents exceptional value.
