Haguenau Hop Market & Weekly Market
Every Tuesday and Saturday morning, the Place de la République and surrounding streets fill with market stalls piled high with Alsatian produce — and in late August the entire city pivots to celebrate its historic hop harvest with the Fête du Houblon, one of Alsace's most exuberant street festivals.
The Saturday Market Experience
Arrive by 08:30 to beat the locals to the best Munster cheese, choucroute-ready cabbages, and still-warm Kugelhopf from the boulangerie vans that drive in from surrounding villages.
The flower stalls along the Moder-facing side of the square are a riot of colour from April through October; even if you're not buying, the scent and spectacle are worth the detour.
The Fête du Houblon — Late August
Haguenau bills itself as the hop capital of France, and the annual Fête du Houblon (Hop Festival), held the last weekend of August, is the proof: brass bands, folk-costume parades, hop-queen crownings and rivers of local Meteor and Kronenbourg beer flow through the pedestrian streets.
Market stalls during the festival sell dried hop garlands, hop-infused cosmetics and limited-edition local beers you simply cannot find anywhere else — stock up.
