Haguenau Hop Market (Marché du Houblon)
Haguenau sits at the centre of France's only significant hop-growing region, and every September the town celebrates with a festival and market that fills the old streets with the heady, grassy scent of freshly harvested cones. It is one of the most distinctive seasonal markets in all of Alsace.
A harvest tradition unlike any other
Local Hopfengärten (hop gardens) stretch across the plain north of town, their towering wire-and-pole frames a defining feature of the Alsatian landscape. Come September, growers bring dried hop cones, hop-infused products — soaps, teas, beers, salts — and craft goods to stalls set up around the Place Joseph Thierry and the pedestrian centre.
The market coincides with the Fête du Houblon, a weekend festival with folk music, guided tours of the hop gardens and tastings of small-batch Alsatian beers brewed with hops picked just days earlier. It is genuinely joyful and refreshingly un-touristy.
What to buy and taste
Beyond novelty hop products, the market is a great place to stock up on Alsatian charcuterie, Munster cheese and the local Kougelhopf cake sold by boulangeries who set up pop-up stalls for the occasion. Pair a slice with a glass of locally brewed Licorne or Météor beer for an instant sense of place.
Artisan producers sell dried hop garlands — the traditional Alsatian home decoration — which pack flat in a suitcase and make a far more evocative souvenir than a fridge magnet.
