Quartier de la Moder & Tanneries Walk
Follow the Moder River as it winds through Haguenau's old tannery quarter and you'll discover a sequence of half-timbered houses, mossy mill-wheels and stone footbridges that feel more like a film set than a functioning city neighbourhood — yet almost no tour group ever finds it.
Walking the Tanners' Quarter
The leather-tanning industry that made Haguenau prosperous from the 13th century onward relied entirely on the Moder's clean, fast-flowing water, and the tanners' houses that line the Quai des Pêcheurs still show the wide ground-floor openings where hides were hung to dry.
Start at the Pont de la Moder behind the Musée Historique and walk north along the right bank; within 200 metres you'll pass three working water-mill sites, a 16th-century wash-house and a sequence of half-timbered façades that have barely changed since engravings made in 1750.
Best Times and Hidden Details
Early morning in summer is magical here: mist lifts off the Moder, swifts scream overhead, and the reflections of the timber-framed houses double in the still water before the first kayaks disturb the surface.
Look for the carved wooden brackets on the house at No. 12 Quai des Pêcheurs — they depict a tanner's tools and a leaping fish, the kind of vernacular craftsmanship that would be a major attraction if it were in Strasbourg or Colmar but here simply exists, unguarded and unlabelled, for anyone curious enough to look up.
