Parco Regionale del Monte Cucco

Just 20 kilometres east of Gubbio, Monte Cucco Regional Park is an Apennine wilderness of beech forests, limestone gorges and wildflower meadows that most visitors to Umbria never reach — which means you get dramatic scenery entirely to yourself. The park's centrepiece is the Grotta di Monte Cucco, one of the deepest cave systems in Italy, but the surface trails are equally rewarding.

The Cave System

The Grotta di Monte Cucco descends to 922 metres below the surface, making it the fifth-deepest cave in Italy; guided tours of the accessible upper chambers take about 90 minutes and pass through cathedral-sized halls hung with stalactites and rimstone pools of crystalline water.

Tours must be booked in advance through the Centro Nazionale di Speleologia at Costacciaro — the village at the park entrance — and are run by qualified guides; the temperature inside is a constant 8°C, so bring a layer regardless of the season.

Surface Trails

The trail to the summit of Monte Cucco (1,566 m) from Sigillo takes about three hours return and passes through ancient beech woodland before emerging onto open limestone karst with views stretching to the Adriatic on clear days.

In spring (April–June) the meadows below the summit are carpeted with wild orchids, gentians and narcissus — the kind of wildflower display that stops you in your tracks.

Getting There & Practicalities

The park is best reached by car from Gubbio via the SS298 toward Scheggia; there is no direct public transport to the trailheads.

The village of Costacciaro has a small bar and a park visitor centre with trail maps; Sigillo, five kilometres south, has a couple of simple restaurants good for a post-hike lunch.
