Osteria del Bargello
Tucked into a narrow medieval lane just off Piazza Grande, Osteria del Bargello is the kind of family-run trattoria that Gubbio locals actually eat in — no laminated tourist menus, just a short handwritten list of Umbrian classics anchored by the town's celebrated black truffle. The tagliatelle al tartufo nero here is one of the most straightforward and satisfying dishes in Umbria.
What to Order
Start with the bruschetta al tartufo — thick slices of toasted Umbrian bread rubbed with garlic and blanketed in a generous smear of black truffle paste; it arrives warm and fragrant and sets the tone perfectly.
For a main, the hand-rolled tagliatelle with shaved fresh black truffle and butter is the signature dish; in autumn ask whether they have fresh Norcia truffle, which is earthier and more aromatic than the summer variety. The scottadito (grilled lamb cutlets) is a reliable second option.
The Setting
The dining room occupies a vaulted stone space that dates to the medieval period — rough-hewn walls, terracotta floors and simple wooden tables create an atmosphere that feels genuinely old rather than artificially rustic.
In warmer months a handful of tables spill onto the cobblestone lane outside, making it one of the prettiest spots in the city for a long lunch.
Wine & Practicalities
The wine list leans on Umbrian DOC bottles — Montefalco Rosso and Colli Martani Grechetto are both well-priced here and pair beautifully with truffle dishes.
Reservations are strongly advised for Friday and Saturday evenings and for any visit during the truffle season (October–December); the room is small and fills quickly.
