Palazzo dei Consoli
Rising from the main piazza on a soaring Gothic arch, Palazzo dei Consoli is the defining silhouette of Gubbio and one of the finest civic buildings in all of medieval Italy. Its crenellated tower punches 50 metres into the Umbrian sky and the views from the top are simply staggering.
A Monument Built to Impress
Completed in 1349 to a design attributed to Gattapone, the palazzo was the seat of Gubbio's consular government and a deliberate statement of civic power. The single vast hall — the Salone dell'Arengo — was engineered to hold the entire citizenry for public assemblies, and its bare stone walls still hum with that collective memory.
Inside, the Civic Museum displays the seven Eugubine Tablets, bronze plaques from the 2nd–1st century BC inscribed in both Umbrian and Latin that are among the most important surviving documents of ancient Italic religion. Seeing the real tablets, not replicas, is a quietly extraordinary experience.
Piazza Grande: The Stage Below
The palazzo anchors Piazza Grande, an audacious artificial terrace cantilevered over the medieval street grid. Sit on the steps at golden hour when the travertine glows amber and swallows wheel around the tower — it feels like a film set that somehow is real.
The piazza hosts the crossbow tournament during the Corsa dei Ceri in May and the Palio della Balestra in September, so if your visit overlaps with either event, the square transforms into a roaring arena of medieval pageantry.
