Mercato Settimanale di Gubbio (Tuesday Market)
Every Tuesday morning the streets around Piazza Quaranta Martiri fill with Gubbio's weekly market — a proper working-market where locals stock up on Umbrian cured meats, aged pecorino, truffle products, seasonal vegetables, hardware and clothing rather than souvenirs for visitors. It is one of the most authentic slices of everyday Umbrian life you can find in the region.
What to Buy
The food stalls are the highlight: look for vendors selling norcineria (pork salumi from the Gubbio tradition), fresh ricotta from local shepherds, dried porcini mushrooms from the surrounding hills, and jars of black truffle paste at prices far below what you'd pay in a tourist shop.
In autumn (October–November) the market swells with stalls selling fresh truffles, chestnuts and new-season olive oil — if you're visiting then, bring a cool bag and buy generously.
The Square Itself
Piazza Quaranta Martiri is named for 40 local men shot by Nazi forces in 1944; a sombre loggia on one side of the square — the Loggia dei Tiratori, where medieval wool was stretched to dry — provides shade for the stalls and a reminder of the town's layered history.
The Roman theatre (Teatro Romano) sits just outside the square's north edge, partially excavated and free to view from the fence — a 1st-century BC stage that still hosts summer performances.
Market Etiquette & Timing
Stalls set up from around 07:30 and begin packing away by 13:00; arrive before 09:30 for the best selection of fresh produce and to avoid the modest mid-morning crowd.
Bring cash — most food vendors do not accept cards — and a reusable bag; the market has no single entrance, just spread naturally through the streets.
