The Medici Walls & Bastions Circuit
Grosseto is one of the best-preserved walled cities in Tuscany, and the hexagonal ring of 16th-century Medici fortifications has been transformed into a shaded public promenade that locals jog and stroll every evening.
A Living Monument, Not a Museum Piece
Unlike many Italian fortifications cordoned off behind ticket barriers, Grosseto's walls are entirely free and open — you can walk the full 2.7-kilometre circuit along the top of the ramparts, passing six distinctive bastions named after Medici family members.
The brick-paved walkway is lined with plane trees that cast deep shade in summer, making this a genuinely pleasant afternoon activity even in July heat.
Bastions, Views and Hidden Corners
Each bastion has its own character: Bastion Cavallerizza houses a small exhibition space; Bastion San Michele offers the best view over the terracotta rooftops toward the Colline Metallifere hills to the north.
At dusk the walls glow amber and the swallows go berserk — it is one of those effortlessly cinematic Tuscan moments that costs absolutely nothing.
