Parco Regionale della Maremma (Parco dell'Uccellina)
Just 15 km south of Grosseto, the Maremma Regional Park protects 100 square kilometres of umbrella-pine forest, limestone cliffs, pristine beaches and macchia scrubland — the last stretch of truly wild Tyrrhenian coastline in central Italy.
The Trails and What You'll See
The park is accessed mainly from the visitor centre at Alberese; from here, numbered trails fan out through the holm-oak forest to clifftop viewpoints and isolated beaches like Cala di Forno, reachable only on foot or by seasonal boat.
Wildlife is genuinely spectacular: Maremma wild horses (the famous butteri herded them for centuries), wild boar, fallow deer, golden eagles and, if you are very lucky, otters in the Ombrone river mouth.
Getting the Most Out of a Visit
Trail A1 to Torre dell'Uccellina is the classic 8 km round trip, climbing through macchia to a ruined medieval watchtower with panoramic views over the Tyrrhenian Sea — start before 09:00 in summer to beat both the heat and the crowds.
Horseback excursions run by local agriturismo operators near Alberese are the most atmospheric way to see the coastal plain at dawn, when the light is pink and the deer are still out.
