Museo Archeologico e d'Arte della Maremma
Tucked into the arcaded Palazzo della Provincia facing Grosseto's cathedral, this compact but richly stocked museum holds the finest collection of Etruscan and Roman artefacts from the Maremma in one place. Painted bucchero pottery, bronze votive figures and a dazzling set of gold jewellery from the necropolis of Vetulonia will stop you in your tracks.
The Etruscan Highlights
The ground-floor Etruscan galleries cover finds from Vetulonia, Roselle and Saturnia — three major centres that flourished between the 8th and 2nd centuries BC. The gold fibulae and amber necklaces from the Vetulonia tombs are among the most important Orientalising-period treasures in Italy outside Rome and Florence.
Don't miss the reconstructed tomb chamber from Vetulonia's Tomba del Duce, which gives a visceral sense of how Etruscan aristocrats staged their afterlife. Informative bilingual panels (Italian and English) make the context easy to absorb even without a guide.
Medieval and Sacred Art Floor
The upper floors pivot to medieval and Renaissance sacred art from the Diocese of Grosseto, including a luminous Madonna and Child attributed to the Sienese master Guido da Siena (13th century) and several gilded polyptychs that once hung in rural Maremma churches.
The collection is small enough to see properly in 90 minutes, which makes it ideal before or after lunch in the piazza outside.
Visiting Practicalities
The museum sits directly on Piazza Baccarini, steps from the Duomo di San Lorenzo. Combined tickets with temporary exhibitions are often available at the front desk.
Tuesday is the quietest day to visit; weekends in July and August see the most visitors, particularly families stopping over on the way to the Argentario coast.
