Mercato Coperto di Grosseto
Tucked inside a handsome early-20th-century covered hall near the city centre, Grosseto's Mercato Coperto is where the Maremma's agricultural bounty — wild boar salumi, aged Pecorino, hand-picked porcini — lands every weekday morning.
What to Buy and Who to Talk To
The market is small enough to cover in 20 minutes but dense with quality: look for Maremma Pecorino at various stages of ageing, fresh ricotta sold in little plastic tubs, and finocchiona (fennel-seed salami) made by producers from the surrounding countryside.
Vendors here are unhurried and genuinely happy to let you taste before you buy — a rarity in more tourist-heavy Tuscan towns.
Eating In and Around the Market
Several stalls sell ready-to-eat food: a porchetta roll sliced to order, a paper cone of fried baccalà, or a bowl of ribollita if the season is right.
The surrounding streets — particularly Via Cairoli — have small alimentari and wine shops where you can assemble a serious picnic to take to the walls or down to the Maremma park.
