Museo Archeologico e d'Arte della Maremma (MAAM)
MAAM packs an extraordinary double punch: a ground-floor archaeological collection tracing Etruscan and Roman civilisation across the Maremma, and an upper-floor diocesan art gallery with medieval panel paintings that would cause a sensation if they were in Florence.
The Etruscan Collection
The star objects are the finds from the ancient Etruscan city of Vetulonia, just 20 km north of Grosseto: gold fibulae, bronze armour, and funerary urns that reveal a sophisticated culture centuries before Rome consolidated power in the region.
The bilingual labelling is clear and the layout chronological, so even visitors new to Etruscan history leave with a coherent sense of the story.
The Sacred Art Upstairs
The diocesan collection on the upper floor contains works by Sienese masters including Sassetta and Segna di Bonaventura — polyptychs and altarpieces that were removed from local churches for conservation and ended up here, largely unseen by international visitors.
Matteo di Giovanni's large-format paintings are particularly fine; the quality-to-crowd ratio is almost absurdly good compared with any Florentine museum.
