Valle del Livo and the Mera River Gorge
Drive twenty minutes north-east of Gravedona into the Valle del Livo and the landscape shifts dramatically from manicured lakeside to raw Alpine wilderness. The Mera river carves through granite gorges, osprey patrol the valley and the air smells of pine resin and snowmelt.
What the Valley Offers
The lower valley floor is threaded by a well-marked trail system suitable for families; the path along the Mera between Sorico and the gorge section involves almost no elevation gain and rewards walkers with river pools clear enough to see trout holding in the current.
Higher up, the trail toward Alpe Giumellino gains serious altitude and opens into high pasture where you might spot chamois on the rocky ridgelines above — a world away from the gelato queues of Bellagio.
Birdwatchers should bring binoculars: the valley is a documented migration corridor, and species from black kite to short-toed eagle pass through in spring and autumn.
Practical Planning
The valley is accessed via the SP4 road from Gravedona toward Livo; the drive itself is scenic and takes about 20 minutes to reach the main trailhead parking near the village of Livo.
Trails are best walked May through October; summer afternoons can bring thunderstorms quickly in Alpine valleys, so start early and carry a waterproof layer.
There are no restaurants in the upper valley — pack lunch and fill water bottles from the mountain springs, which are marked on the CAI trail maps available at the Gravedona tourist office.
