Gravedona Weekly Market (Mercato del Martedì)
Every Tuesday morning Gravedona's lakeside promenade transforms into a lively street market that draws vendors and shoppers from across the upper lake communities of Alto Lario. It is the kind of unpretentious, working Italian market where you buy your cheese next to someone buying curtain fabric, and the espresso at the bar beside the stalls costs the same as it always has.
What You Will Find
Stalls stretch along the waterfront selling seasonal produce from local smallholders — early summer brings cherries and strawberries from the lower slopes, autumn delivers porcini, chestnuts and the small, intensely flavoured apples grown on the terraces above the lake. Mixed in are vendors selling household goods, clothing and the kind of cheerful kitchenware that always ends up in a suitcase.
Look for the cheese and salumi sellers who source from Val Chiavenna and Valtellina producers just north of the lake. Bresaola della Valtellina IGP, bitto cheese aged in mountain huts, and sciatt (buckwheat fritters, sometimes sold ready-made) are the regional highlights worth seeking out.
Making the Most of Market Morning
The market runs roughly from 8:00 to 13:00; serious shoppers arrive before 9:30 when the produce stalls are fully stocked and the light is still low and warm. Afterwards, the obvious move is a lakeside coffee or a glass of local Valtellina Superiore red at one of the bars on Piazza Ferruccio Bianchi.
Parking fills quickly on market days — arrive by ferry from Domaso or Dongo if you are coming from nearby towns, or park on the southern approach road before 8:30.
