Hike or drive the steep lanes above Gravedona toward the hamlet cluster around Peglio and the ridge above it, and you will be rewarded with one of the widest unobstructed panoramas on the entire upper lake — a sweeping arc from the Valtellina Alps in the north all the way south toward Menaggio. This is where locals go when they want to remember why they live here.
The Ascent and the Reward
The most satisfying approach is on foot via the mule track that leaves from the northern edge of Gravedona's old town, climbing through chestnut and oak woodland before breaking out onto open terraced slopes. The walk takes around 75–90 minutes at a relaxed pace and gains roughly 400 metres of elevation.
At the top, the entire upper lake spreads below you like a blue-grey mirror framed by snow-capped peaks for much of the year. On clear days you can pick out the white speck of Bellagio's promontory far to the south, and the distinctive notch of the Splügen Pass to the north.
Best Season and Practical Notes
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer the sharpest visibility and the most dramatic light, with low-angled sun turning the lake surface copper at golden hour. Summer afternoons can build cloud over the peaks, so aim for a morning start.
Bring water and a windproof layer even in summer — the ridge catches a consistent breeze off the lake. The trail is waymarked as part of the Via dei Monti Lariani long-distance path, so signage is reliable.
